I Love Taking The Mickey Out of #April Fools….YOU?
For the benefit of my readers overseas, (and so no one is offended), I think a little Aussie humor needs to be shared.
When I first came to Australia a LONG time ago, I initially had a lot of difficulty understand the difference between American and Australian humor; there is a BIG difference!
Aussie’s love nothing better than to “take the Mickey” out of themselves and others in a fun, teasing sort of way with no intention to harm, hurt or embarrass anyone, but as a tourist and reader today, you might want to keep an open mind.
Even though English is spoken in the States and Australia, think of this Love Taking The Mickey Out of #April Fools post as nothing but poking fun and having fun on April Fools Day which is upon us all worldwide shortly.
Did you ever look at a food, smell a food or taste a food and “thought” it was something only to find out it was something completely opposite?
I can “sense” your fun anxiety and fun curiosity rising and perking through the computer!!!!
For my readers who “may” not be familiar with April Fools Day, it is also called All Fools Day and is considered to be “one of my most light-hearted days of the year”; especially as an Aussie!
The “practice” of celebrating April Fools Day is celebrated in Western countries and I know I have fallen prey to some pretty ingenious April Fools pranks over the years.
Ask my friends, they will tell you, I have a very funny sort of humor, am easy-going and can laugh at myself and Love Taking The Mickey Out of #April Fools.
In other words, I can take it as well as I can give it when it comes to “stirring” people; Aussie lingo loosely translated to make fun “of” someone with the sole purpose in having that person laugh “with” you too!
April Foods Day is about playing “practical jokes,” “tricks” and “pranks”; as such I apologize in advance for potentially food deceiving you!
It’s only because I Love Taking The Mickey Out of #April Fools!
While the actual origin about April Fools Day is questionable, the origin of April Fools Day can be traced back to France in the 16th Century.
France celebrated the New Year, but partied on until the 1st of April; April Fools Day!
Did you know April Fools Day in France is called Poisson d’Avril?
Poisson d’Avril translates to April fish and children tape a paper fish to the back of their friends and when the person finds out, the child YELLS Poisson d’Avril!
Children of all ages in Scotland call each other an April gowk which is a name for a cuckoo bird.
I love how various countries around the world celebrate the same holiday, but in their own unique way!
Which brings me back to my own food prank where I Love Taking The Mickey Out of #April Fools!
Today, I hope you initially “thought” I made some April Fools Ice Cream for you!
I have always wanted to try and make a food that looked like one thing but was something completely different; not easy to do!
After having researched MANY April Fools recipes, I was inspired by the number of No Fail Sugar Cookies and decided to slightly adapt a recipe of my own!

- 3 tablespoons baking powder
- 1¾ cups butter
- ¼ cup lard
- 2 cups brown sugar
- 2 eggs
- ½ teaspoon vanilla powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ cup Dutch cocoa powder
- 125 grams milk chocolate drops
- sprinkles (optional but recommended)
- umbrellas (optional but recommended)
- small wooden ice cream spoons (optional but recommended)
- In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt; set aside.
- In a stand up mixer, cream together butter and brown sugar.
- Add eggs and vanilla powder.
- Slowly add the flour, baking powder and salt mixture; combine well.
- Add Dutch cocoa powder; combine well.
- With an ice cream scoop or large melon baller, scoop cookie dough mixture; allow to overflow in scoop and press down tight with hand to form a ball; remove and place on a flat tray lined with baking paper.
- Freeze cookie dough uncovered for about an hour; remove from freezer.
- Pre-heat oven to 180C.
- Remove cookie dough from baking paper, place on ungreased cookie sheet and bake for about 10 minutes; remove from over; remove from pan to wire racks to cool.
- When balls are cooled, in a small saucepan, melt chocolate drops.
- Assembly in cups or glasses of choice, drizzle chocolate, top with sprinkles and add the umbrella and wooden ice cream spoon.
- ENJOY!
Dough mixture may appear crumbly; is what you are looking for.
